Last year, UR 105.9 and 103.5 MAX FM were kind enough to mention our blog on the air as well! A DJ from UR 105.9 read our text message online, promoting the chairmanila blog. He announced our site address and invited fans to visit the site. Thanks, man!

Also last year, the guys from the now-defunct Logan's Alley featured Chair Manila on their Blog of the Day segment. We were able to contact Marf through friendster, and we sent him the Chair Manila promo message. After a few days, King DJ Logan and Marf talked about Chair Manila in their segment. Thanks, guys!

Another Reason for Silverchair to come back to Manila!

Many thanks to israel's son for giving us this article link! In an interview with Ben Gillies last 1997, the interviewer asked him:

"Which country has the freakiest fans and why?"

to which he answered:

The Philippines. They were mad! They kicked in doors, they broke a $10,000 orchestra pit hydraulic system, they would come backstage willy nilly. They were crazy!

Definitely one point extra for us! Now if we can only get more signatures in our petition. As of this post, we have 62 signatures. Not bad, but we can certainly do better! Let's show Silverchair how freaky we Filipino fans can be!!!

Over at www.chairpage.com/news, several petitions from South America were featured. Brazil and Chile have over a thousand signatures, while Argentina has 135 signatures.

C'mon guys, we can also be noticed, if only our petition has more signatures! :)

Silverchair rightfully opened the Awards with a performance of "Straight Lines", which you can view here:

The band thanked "all the people who have stuck with them over the years". Surely, with their talent, how could one NOT stick with them over the years?

More good news for Chair:

"Straight Lines" is currently a top 10 video and top 20 airplay hit in North America and has received the strongest reviews of Silverchair's career.

At the height of this success, the chances of a concert here in Manila gets more and more possible.

A Radio Roundup

Manila loves Silverchair called various radio stations in the metro to request for and ask about silverchair. We were able to talk to DJs. But we’re not sure if they’re okay with us publishing their names here, since we didn’t say we were putting them up in this fansite, and that we were gonna use our conversations to come up with this Radio Roundup. :-)

MAGIC 89.9- We were able to talk to a male DJ, who said they don’t have "Straight Lines" in their play list. He said he’ll bring it up to his bosses.

MAX 103.5- A girl DJ said "Straight Lines" wasn’t in their playlist. Though she explained they are still finalizing their list because most of the songs come from the station they replaced, Heart 1035. Anyway she asked for the title of the song and said she would tell it to the ‘technician.’ She even asked, "Is it too loud?" Hehe! To this we replied, "No, they grew up already. They’re not grunge anymore."

HIT 99.5- A gal was hosting the No. 1 Hit Weekend, wherein HIT FM plays the hits of the 90s. Yes you guessed it, they don’t have any silverchair song from the 90s. And of course, as expected, they don’t have "Straight Lines."

Which brings us to a slight confusion... HIT FM’s No.1 Hit Weekend brags about playing the 90s hits, yet they don’t have a single Chair song. But they get to play The Offspring, Alice in Chains, and the like.

The same goes with JAM 88.3’s Slide, which also plays hits from the 1990s. But when we got to call the station, two DJs said the same thing, no silverchair song at all. Nada. What a pity. But it’s a consolation JAM plays "Straight Lines"

The latest DJ we were able to talk to was from HIT FM, during the No. 1 Hit Weekend. When we asked why they aren't playing the new Silverchair song, he replied, "Is it a hit?" We said, "Well it’s being played in JAM and NU." Then he said he’ll tell the people over at HIT about it.

(We forgot to tell that DJ, "Straight Lines" was a hit in Australia MONTHS AGO. And the song is getting good airplay in the U.S. It peaked at #2 in VH1, and it’s been on the Billboard Hot Modern Rock chart for 14 weeks now, its latest position being #13. The song and even the album "Young Modern" topped iTunes at the same time.)

Meanwhile, what about Monster Radio RX 93.1? We got through a lot of times, but no one answered the phone. The closest we got was having our text message read on air for the Rant and Rave segment of The Ride with Jude and Danielle. Our message was a rant because RX isn’t playing Silverchair’s new song. One DJ said, "We’ll see what we can do about it."

Moving on to a new rock radio station on the block, 105.9 Underground Radio. They do have silverchair on the playlist! They also played "Straight Lines" a few seconds after we requested for it through the text line. Or maybe it was just coincidence. Hehe.

That’s it for RADIO ROUND UP. How about in provincial stations? Do they get to play the new Chair song, or at least even the old songs? If they do, then that means those provincial stations are cooler than some of the radio stations we mentioned above. Hahaha. Kidding. :-D

The Never Ending Debate - Old Chair VS New Chair

The last thing Filipinos heard of Silverchair was "The Greatest View" back in 2002. Well to be more accurate, Filipinos last "heard of" and "read about" Silverchair in 2005, when an issue came out about a band that allegedly ripped-off the chorus line of "The Greatest View." But that’s all in the past. Such band has denied the alleged rip-off. Moving on to the present…

After five long years, Silverchair is back with a new album, their fifth record, "Young Modern."

There have been varied reactions to the new album and the direction the band took since they announced a hiatus in 2002.

(For the foreigners, some of the posters are shocked by the change of music and even the look of the band. They found it difficult to accept the “change,” while some have said they have matured already; and their music is still good.)

JAM 88.3

“Straight Lines” has been getting airplay in Jam 88.3 since late July/ August. As of September 10, 2007, “Straight Lines” is number 12 in the Live Top 25. It was number 13 the previous week. The song has been on the charts for seven weeks now.

Meanwhile, we called up Jam 88.3 one Friday to request for “Tomorrow” or “Abuse Me” since every Friday is Slide, wherein they play 90s songs. But lo and behold, they don’t have any other Chair song aside from “Straight Lines.” Sigh.

NU 107

As expected, The Home of NU Rock has Silverchair on its playlist. From Frogstomp, to Freak Show, Neon Ballroom and Diorama, and of course now to Young Modern, NU 107.5 has all the Chair hit tracks from those five albums.

The latest we know of “Straight Lines” is that it was number two in the Stairway to Seven countdown. But that was in July 28, 2007. Did “Straight Lines” ever reach number one??

Anyway, we do hope NU107 will start playing “Reflections of a Sound” and “If You Keep Losing Sleep” soon.

The last time we heard Chair over at NU107 was during Remote Control Weekend (6PM Friday up to Sunday, where the playlist comprises requests). The song we heard? “Freak.”

MYXELLANEOUS FEATURES SILVERCHAIR

MYXELLANEOUS is a show on the Philippines’ number one music channel, MYX. We’ve seen this feature air about four times. The last two times were both on Saturday mornings, 8 a.m., September 22 and 29, 2007.

(Heck, MYX deserves to be number one because it featured silverchair!!)

The Chair feature starts off with a walk down memory lane. Silverchair rose to fame at the young age of 16. Before that, their name was Innocent Criminals. Their song “Tomorrow” won in a national song competition. And the rest is history. Their debut album Frogstomp carried the smash hit “Tomorrow.” Then their second album, Freak Show gave us the hits “Cemetery,” “Abuse Me” and “Freak.” The feature notes, “Freak” was done in relation to the expectations on the band after Frogstomp. Freak turned Gold in the U.S.

The boys then finished college and had more time to focus on their music. But Daniel dealt with an eating disorder, and “Ana’s Song” was a testament to that ordeal.

Anyway, that song came from their third album, Neon Ballroom. They were able to promote this record to a large extent, and even toured with the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Blink 182. Other hits from Neon Ballroom are “Miss You Love” and “Anthem for the Year 2000.”

In 2001, Silverchair released Diorama, their fourth studio album. The feature now shows Daniel talking about Diorama, saying that stuff on that record were complex (this comes from the Young Modern Documentary). “The Greatest View” was the carrier single and it was a hit as well. Though as compared to the extensive promotions for Neon Ballroom, Diorama had few promotional acts, and Chair didn’t perform as many shows. But this didn’t stop the band from winning at the Australian Record Industry (ARIA) Awards, for best group and best rock album (these words were flashed on screen in all caps) for Diorama.

The band then announced a hiatus and pursued different individual interests.

The feature shows Daniel again, sitting on a curb in a polo and tie. Daniel said they really enjoyed doing their individual interests. It gave them clarity, and made them realize how fortunate they are to be in a band at such a young age, where their chemistry is intangible.

Daniel then explains why their fifth album is entitled, “Young Modern.” Daniel says he always wanted to call the record Young Modern because that’s what Van Dyke Parks always calls him, “Hello there, Young Modern.”

Ben adds, he honestly thinks Young Modern is the best Silverchair record yet.

Chris, for his part, says Silverchair is on the right track.

Now Ben talks about Young Modern’s first single, “Straight Lines.” Ben says it is an epic song, an epic piece. He even states the feeling of how the hair at the back of your neck rises… and he could already see the crowd raise their arms and go “Aaaah!”

The Chair feature now goes into the making of the video for “Straight Lines.” The band even invited their fans to be part of the video shoot as extras. One female fan came from Brazil and she was totally thrilled to be there. She said it was a dream come true. The videos shows the fans getting autographs and having pictures taken with Silverchair. (Lucky bastards!)

Chris then tells the camera they are at the Olympic Park Train Station… in the tunnel. He adds, it’s getting very exciting, early in the day. Ben even mentions he’s nervous.

Daniel, Chris and Ben are now in the tunnel. Then Daniel mutters, I’m a natural… born to be a star. Then Ben joins in and says “natural” too.. and they laugh.

They now talk about the lights on the set… Ben says they’re pretty bright. Chris adds, “You can seriously roast a chicken here.”

And the MYXELLANEOUS feature is off to a close now… with “Straight Lines” playing in the background and clips of the video shoot being shown.

The feature ends with a male voice over saying, Silverchair is traveling in a straight line toward continuous growth of their already rocking career. (Right on!)

Manila Vanilla

This is the venue to have the Silverchair come back and rock Manila once again! The Philippines and Japan are the only two countries that Silverchair has visited thus far. The guys went to Japan in 1996, while Manila was part of their 1997 tour, the only Asian country they visited that year. Daniel Johns explains, "This is the place where we've been selling the best (in Asia), and getting played on the radio." The Philippines is the last Asian country they have ever played at.

The one and only Silverchair concert held in Manila was staged at the University of the Philippines (UP) back in June 22, 1997, where Johns said all of a sudden "Man-nil-la, tastes like vanilla, someone tried to kill her, 'cos she stole my pillar!". He further expounds: "That was a song called Manila, about this girl I picked up round the corner for 15 dollars". Hence, the name of the petition: Manila Vanilla.
